Comfort women cartoon to be showcased throughout LA’s Korean Festival

Korean Americans campaigning for the recognition of the history of comfort women will continue its effort at the 41st Los Angeles Korean Festival.

According to the Los Angeles Korean Festival Foundation, “Flowers That Never Fade,” a cartoon detailing the history of comfort women, will be showcased throughout the four-day festival, held annually at Seoul International Park from Sept. 18 to 21.

The foundation said the cartoon is a depiction of the suffering by the young women from Korea, China and the Philippines, among others, who were taken as sex slaves by Japanese soldiers during World War II.

The cartoon seeks to educate viewers on the history of comfort women, a controversial issue that sparked the Korean American community to action in recent years.

The comfort woman statue installed in Glendale last year spurred a Japanese American organization to unsuccessfully sue the city in a request to take it down; plans for another statue, this time in Fullerton, are underway.

Nabi USA in Los Angeles, an organization that started a signature campaign in June for the Japanese government to provide compensation to Korean comfort women, plans to collect signatures from festival-goers.

The campaign aims to collect 100 million signatures around the globe, said Nabi L.A. President Angela Lee.
