Korean American community year in review, part 1: David Ryu joins LA City Council

David Ryu, a Korean American Angeleno, saw victory this year as he became the first to be elected into the city council in the community’s 112-year immigration history.

Ryu took the seat in the May general election after a one-year campaign for termed-out Councilman Tom LaBonge’s District 4 seat.

The win was the mark of a giant step forward for the local Korean American community, the largest such population outside of Korea.

“Without the Korean American community, I couldn’t have won,” Ryu said after the election. “This is a victory that came about as a result of a united Korean community. … Through my election, I’ll work hard to help the political power of the Los Angeles Korean American community grow.”

    David Ryu has been by far one of the worst councilmembers CD4 has elected.
