Korean playwright to debut ‘Peerless’ this week

A dark comedy, “Peerless,” by Korean American playwright Jiehae Park, will open Friday at the Yale Repertory Theater in New Haven, Connecticut, Friday.

“Peerless,” introduced by the New York Times last week, paints a picture of a Midwest high school during college admissions season through the eyes of success-driven Asian twins. The play is based loosely on “Macbeth.”

Park, 35, was born in Seoul and brought to the United States when she was three years old. Her story mirrors the experiences of many children of immigrants: the SAT in fourth grade, special advanced classes in computer, math and science, work as a test-prep instructor through high school.

She told the NYT that she always loved theater but that, as the “Asian child of immigrant scientists,” she was never sure if she was allowed.

Park studied theater at Amherst College and earned an MFA at the University of California, San Diego. Along the way, she discovered her love of writing.

“I love writing,” she said. “I can’t actually imagine my life without it. But I do feel that it sort of happened to me.”
