The bar has been set. If there’s a Major League club that wants to sign Japan-based Korean slugger Lee Dae-ho, they are going to have to pay at least $7 million for two-years.

Orix Buffaloes have offered to extend Lee’s contract for two more years at yearly salary of 350 million yen, approximately $3.5 million U.S. dollars, according to Sankei Sports of Japan.

Lee’s recently expired two-year contract was for 500 million yen ($5 million), with a signing bonus of 200 million yen ($2 million), and a maximum yearly incentive bonus of 30 million yen ($300,000). In other words, the Japanese club is offering an annual one-million dollar raise in base salary.

Orix officials appear confident that Lee will re-sign since only seven other players command that kind of salary in Japan. Among foreign players, only a former Chicago Cub, Bryan LaHair, will make more, at $4.5 million.

One of the industry’s most established agents, Scott Boras, has reportedly reached out to Lee. Korean players in the past have refused to accept less money to come and play in the U.S.
