Mass. Governor’s Council to vote on first-ever Korean American judge

Massachusetts may soon see its first-ever Korean American judge.

Myong J. Joun, 43, is a civil rights attorney who was nominated to a seat in the Boston Municipal Court by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick.

The Governor’s Council will vote Wednesday.

Joun moved to Brooklyn with his single mother and two younger siblings when he was 4. His mother only had $46 to her name when the family started their lives in America.

A graduate of Suffolk University Law School, Joun started work at Howard Friedman, P.C. in 1997 before opening his own practice in 2007.

Joun was selected as one of the “Top 100 Criminal Defense Lawyers in Massachusetts” in 2013.

    Correction please: Boston Municipal Court Judge Eleanor Coe Sinnott is the first Korean American judge to be appointed in the Commonwealth of Massaachusetts.Judge Sinnott was appointed by Governor Mitt Romney in November 2006. Her parents were born in Korea and emigrated to the United States in the1950s.
