Men triumph at top 3 entertainment awards shows
SEOUL, Dec. 30 (Yonhap) — The top honors of the three big entertainment awards shows in South Korea have gone to male entertainers, with their rival nominees also being men.
Comedian-turned-entertainer Yoo Jae-suk received the top award at this year’s MBC Entertainment Awards on Thursday. The event is one of the three year-end awards ceremonies organized by South Korean terrestrial TV broadcasters MBC, SBS and KBS.
The 44-year-old awardee has hosted MBC’s hit reality entertainment show “Infinite Challenge” for the past 11 years. He also hosted popular entertainment shows of two other broadcasters, including “Happy Together Season 3″ on KBS2 and “Running Man” on SBS.
Other nominees for the awards were popular male show hosts Kim Gu-ra, Jeong Jun-ha and anchor-turned-emcee Kim Seong-ju.
With the honor, Yoo now has 13 top awards from the three big shows under his belt.
“The more awards I receive, the sorrier I feel,” he said at MBC’s ceremony in western Seoul. “I extend my gratitude and apology to Kim Gu-ra, Kim Seong-ju and Jeong Jun-ha.”
Show host and entertainer Shin Dong-yup won the top award at the 2016 SAF SBS Entertainment Awards on Monday. The honor marks the veteran entertainer’s first big award from one of the year-end shows.
His rival nominees were Yoo, Kim Byung-man, Kim Gu-ra and Kim Gook-jin, who are also all male.
The 44-year-old was victorious thanks to the popularity of “Mom’s Diary — My Ugly Duckling,” his latest SBS reality show about single, middle-aged male entertainers and their worried mothers.
“The award really should have gone to the women of ‘My Ugly Duckling,’” Shin said in his acceptance speech. “I will make sure to share this trophy and the glory that comes with it with them.”
Since his debut in 1991, he has hosted a number of hit shows, including “Hello Counselor” and “Immortal Songs: Singing the Legend” on KBS, and “SNL Korea” on cable network tvN.
The top award of the 2016 KBS Entertainment Awards went to emcee Kim Jong-min, one of the founding hosts of KBS’ hit entertainment show “Two Days, One Night.”
He snagged the grand prize at KBS’ event on Christmas Eve, beating nominees Yoo, Shin, comedian-TV persona Kim Joon-ho and comedian-entertainer Lee Hwi-jae.
On stage, Kim said he did not expect to win the honor.
“Even the idea of having my name among the nominees sounded so unreal to me,” he said. “I would like to thank Yoo Jae-suk for helping me enter the entertainment scene, Kang Ho-dong for fueling me and Cha Tae-hyun for supporting me.”
Kim debuted on TV in 1992 as a comedian. Since then, he has widened his portfolio to entertainment shows, hosting “Sang Sang Plus,” “Sponge” and “The Return of Superman.”
