S. Korea prepares various events to promote Korean culture at Rio

SEOUL, Aug. 2 (Yonhap) — South Korea will hold various events to promote traditional and contemporary Korean culture during the Rio Olympics, a government agency said Tuesday.

The Korean Culture and Information Service affiliated with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said it will hold events from Aug. 6-22 on Copacabana Beach, one of the main tourist destinations in Rio de Janeiro. This year’s Summer Games will run from Aug. 5 till Aug. 21.

“We’re going to promote Korean culture through performances of fusion gugak, traditional dance, Nanta and taekwondo,” the agency said. Gugak is traditional Korean music while Nanta is a long-running Korean non-verbal show.

The agency also plans to set up a Korean tourism promotion booth inside the “PyeongChang 2018 House in Rio,” a promotion center for the 2018 Winter Games that opens this weekend on the beach.

The Korean Tourism Organization, a government agency for the promotion of Korean tourism, will run programs to provide hands-on experiences in Korean calligraphy and craft using traditional Korean paper hanji at the booth. Photos and videos themed on the global boom of Korean pop culture, known as hallyu, will also be shown.

The Korean Culture Center in Sao Paulo, meanwhile, will run a program screening Korean films on Aug. 10-13.
