S. Korea to ban online training courses for language teacher certification

The National Institute of Korean Language said it will establish new guidelines and regulations for overseas Korean language teacher hopefuls by banning online training courses.

According to the institute, it will halt its online training courses beginning in 2017.

Students must take the training course to complete certification to teach Korean.

Currently, the process includes lecture observation, mock courses and practice teaching, but some programs, taking location into account, accept course completion through online methods. Students may receive feedback through videos of themselves giving lessons, and the institute seeks to ban these practices, which would make it necessary for those seeking Korean language teaching certification to travel to Korea.

“If they implement this regulation, then I’m curious as to how overseas students can take courses to become Korean language teachers,” a source from an online institution said.

“A large percentage of students overseas are looking to complete Korean language teacher certification courses using online methods,” said Jang Eun-ah, a Seoul National University professor. “If those realistic factors are not considered and all training is made offline, I’d expect many students overseas to give up.”
