Samsung set to release new phablets in New York

SEOUL (Yonhap) — South Korea’s top tech giant Samsung Electronics Co. is set to launch its latest phablets on Apple Inc.’s home turf on Thursday in its latest efforts to far outstrip the U.S. archrival.

Samsung is widely expected to release the Galaxy Note 5, a cross between a smartphone and a tablet PC, along with the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus, a bigger edition of the Galaxy S6 Edge released in April. The showcase is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. in New York.

While the South Korean giant has introduced new phablets at Germany’s Internationale Funkausstellung (IFA) that falls in September, market watchers said the earlier-than-usual release came as Apple is set to showcase the iPhone 6S and the iPhone 6S Plus next month.

The Galaxy Note 5 is anticipated to come with a 5.7-inch super active mode organic light-emitting diode (SAMOLED) QHD display and feature a wireless-charging system like the flagship Galaxy S6.

Sources said it will also come with two cameras — one 16 megapixels, the other 5 megapixels — along with a 64-bit octa-core processor.

Others expect the presumed Galaxy Note 5 and the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus will come with significantly improved batteries as they will not be detachable.

The possibility of Samsung introducing the Galaxy S6 Edge Plus rose as the Galaxy S6 Edge bought stronger-than-expected popularity from the market since its launch.

The company also earlier won the copyright to the name “S6 EDGE+” in the United States.

But Samsung has not been making any comments on the details of the models to be showcased in New York.

The new smart devices to be showcased by Samsung on Thursday will also mark a full-fledged launch of its mobile payment system, industry watchers also said.

The Samsung Pay service, which is currently on a pilot run after the release of the Galaxy S6, supports not only the near field communication (NFC) technology, but also magnetic secure transmission (MST) and bar code technologies.

The MST technology is significant as it is compatible with conventional credit card devices, which means it can be used in a wider number of shops compared with Apple Pay.

Samsung took up 26.8 percent of the world’s smartphone market in the April-June period, unchanged from the previous quarter’s reading, while Apple saw its share fall to 16.4 percent from 20.5 percent over the cited period, according to the data compiled by industry tracker TrendForce.
