SNU staff to receive mandatory education on rights, sex

SEOUL (Yonhap) — Seoul National University (SNU), the most prestigious school in South Korea, will make it mandatory for all staff members to regularly take education courses on human rights and gender quality, the university said Thursday, after a series of sexual assaults by its professors have marred the school’s image.

All faculty members will be required to take a series of education courses on human rights and gender equality administered throughout the year or face disadvantages in promotions or recruitment, starting the first semester of next year, the school said.

The courses will be offered both on-line and off-line and certificates will be issued to those who finish them. These certificates must be renewed yearly by retaking the course.

Students will also be obliged to receive a similar education course focused more information on how to respond when they became victims of sexual assault on campus, according to the university.

To encourage students’ active participation, the school is considering barring those who fail to complete the course from access to the school’s computerized grading system, officials said.

The university came under fire after one of its professors was arrested last week on charges of sexually harassing his intern, in her 20s, and several other female students.

On Wednesday, a professor of the university’s graduate school of dentistry, was reported to the police for allegedly trying to kiss a female student attending the school against her will.
