Tampa Bay Rays designate S. Korean prospect Lee Hak-ju for assignment

South Korean shortstop prospect Lee Hak-ju has been designated for assignment by the Tampa Bay Rays to make room for another player on their 40-man roster on Tuesday.

That means the Rays have 10 days to trade, waive or release Lee. If the player clears the waivers, the club may release him outright or keep him in the minors. 

Lee, 24, began his U.S. career in the Chicago Cubs’ system in 2009 but has yet to play in the majors. Although he was traded to the Rays in 2011, he has always been a highly regarded prospect, especially with his glove.

In 2011, Lee was rated the Rays’ No. 25 prospect, according to MLBPipeline.com, as he split his time between Single-A and Double-A.

However, he has yet to prove he can consistently hit, and his development has been slowed by an assortment of injuries.

In August 2012, Lee suffered a season-ending oblique strain while playing in Double-A. Then only 15 games into the 2013 season for the Triple-A Durham, he tore ligaments in his left knee and missed the rest of the season.

This year, Lee was hitting .220 with three homers and 27 RBIs in 96 games for Durham.
